Cannara: a village and his festival
Cannara
lies in the centre of the Umbrian Valley, between mount Subasio and Monti
Martani. This busy small town has about 3800 inhabitants though this number
grows up constantly. Its economy is based on agriculture, industry and handcraft
with good possibilities of improvement. Social life is animated by a high number
of associations which take care of sport, music, solidarity and culture.
Choosing Umbria like an ideal destination, tourists will find in Cannara the
answers to his expectations. First of all the central position and the closeness
to some of the most famous cities of art (Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, Gubbio,
Spello, Bevagna, Montefalco). So that you can stay in a hotel or a country house
in Cannara and start your artistical trip. Hospitality is also one of the
prerogatives of Cannara, which offers to you a quiet place, a good cooking and
the possibility to appreciate the products of our agriculture. Such as
“vernaccia” (a sweet raisin wine red), onions, olive oil and Collemancio
wines. There is also an organised area for caravans that the municipal
administration placed close to “Parco XXV Aprile”, a wonderful garden where
you can practise any kind of sport. As regards cultural events, we have to
mention the “infiorata” (carpets of flowers laid down with care along the
streets) in June, the onion’s Festival in September and the wine’s Festival
in Collemancio between June and July. Climbing the hill you reach the medieval
centre of Collemancio with his famous "Urvinum Hortense", the only
archaeological area in the Umbrian Valley. Some years ago this area has been
interested by some archaeological excavations that permitted the recovery of
important ruins and the famous thermal’s mosaic preserved by the department of
architecture. The municipal administration aware of the importance of this area
is working together with the university of Perugia, the department for
architecture of Umbria, the Pro-Loco
of Cannara and the Committee of
Collemancio to favour the resumption of archaeological works and the realisation
of a museum. In Cannara its also possible to find some significant testimonies
about the presence of S. Francis of Assisi like the famous “Sermon to the
birds” in Piandarca, the “Holy Tugurio” and the institution of the
“Terz’ordine Francescano”. Besides you have the opportunity to visit lots
of churches. For instance the church of S. Biagio, in Romanic style, dated back
to the XII century. In conclusion we are convinced that our small town could
represent a good reason to spend quite days in an incontaminate nature close to
art beauties and in a pleasant atmosphere.
